Honiara International Airport guide

Honiara International Airport (formerly Henderson Field) lies 8 kilometres from Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, on the island of Guadalcanal. The airfield was built by Japanese forces in 1942 during World War II. US Marines captured it in August 1942 and named it Henderson Field after Major Lofton Henderson, a Marine pilot killed at the Battle of Midway. It was abandoned until the 1960s and reopened as a civilian airport in 1969.

The airport has a single asphalt runway, 06/24, 2,200 metres long. It is the only international airport in the Solomon Islands, with flights to Brisbane, Port Moresby and Port Vila. Air Niugini, QantasLink and Solomon Airlines serve the airport, and Solomon Airlines also operates the domestic network to the provinces.

The terminal has an arrivals hall with a car rental desk, a duty-free shop and SIM card sales, and there is a souvenir store in departures. Taxis and mini-buses are available outside, and hotels can arrange transfers.

The Solomon Islands Airport Corporation Limited (SIACL) took over operations on 1 October 2023. Its chief executive has described the 2023 Pacific Games as the busiest time in the airport's history.
