Mono Airport guide

Mono Airport is an airstrip on Stirling Island in the Treasury Islands, Western Province, Solomon Islands. Its IATA code is MNY and its ICAO code is AGGO. Stirling Island lies just south of Mono Island, separated from it by the deep-water channel of Blanche Harbour, and the airport is also called Stirling Airfield or Mono Island Airport.

The strip began as a United States Navy fighter and bomber base. The 87th Naval Construction Battalion started work on 29 November 1943, and the Seabees finished a 6,000-foot coral runway by 2 January 1944. The base supported raids on Rabaul, Bougainville and New Ireland until the Seabees left in September 1944. The strip is still known by its wartime name, Coronus Strip.

Solomon Airlines is the airline associated with the airport, with past routes to Gizo and Munda. Regular scheduled service was suspended around 2009, and flights now run on an ad hoc basis, mainly around Christmas. Boats link the Treasury Islands with the rest of the province.
