Munda Airport guide

Munda International Airport sits beside the town of Munda on New Georgia Island in Western Province, Solomon Islands. Its IATA code is MUA and its ICAO code is AGGM. The airport lies about 3 metres above sea level and is the main gateway to the western Solomons.

Japanese forces built the airfield in 1942, and a fighter runway was operating by mid-December of that year. US Navy Seabees expanded it after capturing it in 1943. After the war it became a commercial airport for regional flights. A New Zealand-funded project in 2013 repaired the runway and cleared unexploded ordnance, and further New Zealand funding in 2019 brought it up to international standards.

The single asphalt runway, 07/25, is 2,100 metres long. A new international terminal opened in October 2023, built under the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project with funding from the Solomon Islands Government, the World Bank and New Zealand. Solomon Airlines is the airline listed at Munda. It links the airport with Honiara, Gizo, Seghe and other provincial strips, and with Brisbane on international flights that began in 2024.
