Mário Ribeiro Airport serves Montes Claros, the main city of northern Minas Gerais. Its ICAO code is SBMK. It began as the Aeródromo Governador Valadares, inaugurated on 18 December 1939, with Panair do Brasil as the first airline, and took its current name in 2003. The airport sits at 668 metres above sea level, about 7 km from the city centre.

The airport has one asphalt runway, 12/30, measuring 2,100 by 45 metres. Operations paused in 1977 so the runway could be extended to 2,100 metres for jets, and service resumed in 1978. A terminal renovation finished in 2021 and raised capacity from 800,000 to 1.5 million passengers a year, and a new terminal opened in June 2026. The airport handled 355,389 passengers and 10,903 aircraft operations in 2025, and about 282 tonnes of cargo.

Azul flies to Belo Horizonte-Confins, Gol to São Paulo-Congonhas and LATAM to São Paulo-Guarulhos. Infraero ran the airport from 1980 until 2022. Aena then won a 30-year concession and took over management in November 2023.
