Usiminas Airport Guide
Vale do Aço Regional Airport serves Ipatinga and the surrounding Vale do Aço steel region of eastern Minas Gerais. It was long known as Usiminas Airport, after the steelmaker that built and ran it. The airport sits in the neighbouring municipality of Santana do Paraíso, at 240 metres above sea level. Its ICAO code is SBIP.
It has one asphalt runway, 05/23, about 2,004 metres long. The airport is close to the BR-381 and BR-458 highways. Infraero now operates it, after Usiminas and then Socicam.
Scheduled service is limited. Azul flies to Belo Horizonte-Confins, and business and general aviation use the field too. Passenger numbers fell 24% in 2025 to 134,302, with about 5,000 aircraft movements. Flights stopped in February 2019 when ANAC suspended operations over structural problems in the runway, and the airport reopened in December 2021. A new passenger terminal has been authorised to lift capacity from about 150,000 passengers a year toward 1.5 million.
