The airport sits on the plain south of Nîmes, in the commune of Garons, with a postal address in Saint-Gilles. It is also known locally as Nîmes-Garons and is listed in some sources as Nîmes-Arles-Camargue. The airfield dates from 1931, when the French state bought land for an aerodrome, and Air Inter began scheduled flights in October 1961.

The airport is shared with the military. The Sécurité Civile firefighting aircraft base moved here from Marseille, and the Army uses the former naval air base facilities. That mix is why aircraft movements, 28,175 in 2024, run well above what the civil traffic alone would suggest.

Commercial service is small and centres on Ryanair, with year-round flights to Charleroi (Brussels), Fès and Marrakech, and seasonal flights to Dublin and London Stansted. Traffic reached 259,054 passengers in 2024, after falling to 57,824 in 2020. The single concrete runway, 18/36, is 2,443 m long. The terminal covers 4,260 m2 and can handle up to 800,000 passengers a year. It has a departure lounge, a VIP lounge and a snack bar.
