Karratha Airport Guide
Karratha Airport serves the Pilbara region of Western Australia, about 14 km from the city of Karratha. Hamersley Iron built an airport on the site in 1966 and called it Dampier Airport. It later passed to the Shire of Roebourne, now the City of Karratha, which operates it.
A single asphalt runway, 08/26, is 2,280 m long. The runway routinely handles aircraft up to Boeing 737-800 size. The former runway is now a taxiway and helicopter landing site, used for North West Shelf gas field services and marine pilot transfers. A $35 million terminal upgrade opened on 25 September 2015. It added a cafe, a bar, a combined arrivals and departures area, and improved security screening and baggage reclaim.
Traffic is driven largely by fly-in fly-out workers for the region's iron ore and gas projects. The airport handled 675,207 passengers in 2011 and 463,966 in 2016/17. Scheduled flights link Karratha to Perth, with regional services to Broome, Geraldton and Port Hedland.
