The airport sits at Moonyoonooka, about 11 km east of Geraldton on the Mid West coast of Western Australia. It traces its history to 1921, when the first scheduled air mail service in Australia left Geraldton for Derby. The field was later moved from Utakarra to its present site, and from 1941 to 1945 it housed No. 4 Service Flying Training School of the RAAF.

Three runways are listed: an asphalt main runway, 03/21, extended to about 2,400 m in a 2019 expansion, plus two shorter strips, 08/26 (gravel) and 14/32 (asphalt). The main strip takes jet aircraft, and QantasLink has flown Airbus A320s on the Perth route since 2021. Nexus Airlines added Dash 8 Q400 flights in 2023.

The airport carried 80,374 passengers in the 2021-22 financial year, down from a peak of more than 130,000 in 2012-13. Fly-in fly-out charters for mining and resources work make up part of the traffic. The owner, the City of Greater Geraldton, runs the airport.
