The airport sits on the western edge of Broome, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, more than 2,000 km north of Perth. It began in 1921 as an unpaved sand strip for airmail aircraft on the Perth to Darwin air link and moved to its present site in 1935. Japanese aircraft attacked it in March 1942, killing people and destroying aircraft on the ground.

A single asphalt runway, 10/28, is 2,368 m long. Despite the name, the airport had no scheduled international flights as of mid-2026, after a seasonal Singapore service ended in 2025. Regular passenger services are domestic, linking Broome to Perth and to Kimberley, Pilbara and Northern Territory centres.

The operator says more than 400,000 passengers pass through each year, with traffic peaking in the dry season from May to October. A masterplan published in 2025 sets out upgraded runways and taxiways and a larger, more comfortable terminal.
