Dane County Regional Airport, also called Truax Field, sits about 11 km northeast of downtown Madison. It opened in September 1937. The current terminal opened in December 1966, and the first scheduled jets, Northwest Orient 727s, arrived in 1965. Dane County owns and operates the airport.

Three concrete runways serve it: 18/36 at 9,006 feet, 3/21 at 7,200 feet and 14/32 at 5,846 feet. A South Terminal expansion that opened in June 2023 brought the terminal to 16 gates on one concourse.

In 2025 the airport handled nearly 2.5 million passengers, an all-time record and about 6% above 2024. Breeze Airways began service, and seasonal nonstops to Phoenix and Fort Myers operate in the winter season. The most recent operations figure available is 76,218 aircraft movements in 2022.

The airfield is shared with the 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard, which flies the F-35 Lightning II, and with an Army National Guard aviation battalion flying UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters. The FAA classes MSN as a small-hub primary commercial service airport. The county announced in February 2025 that it would apply for international airport status.
