Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport sits about 9 km south of downtown Milwaukee on land Milwaukee County bought in 1926. Commercial service began in July 1927, when Northwest Airlines started flights to Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul. The airport covers 2,314 acres and has five runways. Milwaukee County operates it.
The main terminal has two concourses, C and D, with 38 gates combined. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines use Concourse C, and the remaining airlines use Concourse D. International arrivals are handled in a separate International Arrivals Building. Construction of a new Concourse E, a $95 million project that replaces that building, began in late 2025, with completion expected in 2027. The General Mitchell Air National Guard Base, home of the 128th Air Refueling Wing, shares the airfield.
The airport handled 6,316,245 passengers in 2024, a 5% increase on 2023. Its website lists nonstop service to at least 30 destinations. Chicago O'Hare lies roughly 120 km to the south.
