M. R. Štefánik Airport sits 9 kilometres northeast of Bratislava's city centre, making it one of the most centrally located airports in Central Europe. It serves as Slovakia's primary international gateway and draws passengers from a four-country catchment area that includes parts of Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

The airport operates from a single terminal completed in 2012, with 29 check-in desks and 13 gates split between Schengen and non-Schengen zones. Two perpendicular runways allow operations in varied wind conditions. Ryanair and Wizz Air are the dominant carriers, with Wizz Air establishing a base in late 2025, expanding from two routes to 16. The airport handled a record 2,400,000 passengers in 2025, a 25% increase over 2024.

The airport was named after Slovak General Milan Rastislav Štefánik following Slovak independence in 1993. Its proximity to Vienna — approximately 80 kilometres by road — means it competes with Vienna International Airport for regional traffic, and many passengers use BTS as a lower-cost alternative to the Austrian capital's hub.
