Murtala Muhammed International Airport sits in Ikeja, about 12 km northwest of central Lagos. It is Nigeria's busiest airport and a major hub for West African aviation. The airport is named after General Murtala Muhammed, the fourth head of state of Nigeria, following his assassination in 1976.

The airport handled 16.8 million passengers in 2024 across its international and domestic terminals. International traffic reached 4.3 million passengers that year, with Air Peace, Emirates, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Lufthansa among the major carriers. The domestic segment processed 12.5 million passengers, served primarily through MMA2.

The facility operates two asphalt runways — the primary runway stretches 3,900 m and a secondary runway runs 2,743 m. A new international Terminal 2 commissioned in March 2022 added capacity for 14 million passengers annually. The airport has historically served as a key gateway for sub-Saharan Africa, with direct long-haul routes to North America, Europe, the Middle East, and across the African continent.
