Kufra Airport guide

Kufra Airport serves Al Jawf, the main town of the Kufra District in the Libyan Sahara. It lies just east of the town, in the far south-east of the country, close to the borders with Egypt, Sudan and Chad.

The field began as Buma Airfield, a minor Italian facility built in the 1930s. In early World War II it gave Italy an air link to its East African territories. Free French forces under General Leclerc captured it, along with Kufra Oasis, on 1 March 1941.

The airport has one active asphalt runway, 02L/20R, which is 3,660 m long. A second parallel runway, 02R/20L, is closed. Libyan Airlines flew a twice-weekly Boeing 727-200 service from Benghazi for at least ten years until it was suspended in 2004, and scheduled flights restarted in July 2013. Afriqiyah Airways and Libyan Airlines now connect the airport with Benghazi and Tripoli Mitiga. Since 2023 the airport has also served as a supply hub run by the United Arab Emirates for operations linked to the Sudanese civil war.
