Catania–Fontanarossa Airport is Sicily's busiest airport, sitting on the island's east coast near the second-largest Sicilian city. Also known as Vincenzo Bellini Airport after the opera composer born in Catania, it traces back to a civil aerodrome inaugurated in May 1924, making it one of Italy's oldest continuously operating airports. Società Aeroporto Catania (SAC) manages the facility today.
Traffic has grown sharply in recent years. The airport carried 12.3 million passengers in 2024, a 15 percent rise on 2023, with 82,530 aircraft movements recorded the same year. Ryanair runs the largest base at the airport, operating roughly 320 weekly departures, while Wizz Air treats Catania as a focus city. ITA Airways, Lufthansa and KLM connect the airport to Rome, Milan and northern Europe.
A single asphalt runway, 08/26, handles all traffic and measures 2,560 metres. Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano, rises inland and is visible from many arriving and departing flights on clear days. The airport sits in the Fontanarossa district, a short train ride from Catania's central station.
