São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport Guide
São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport is Brazil's busiest airport and the main international gateway to São Paulo, sitting in the city of Guarulhos northeast of the metropolitan center. Commercial flights began on 20 January 1985, when the airport took over long-haul traffic from the older Congonhas Airport. Locals still call it Cumbica, after the district and the adjoining Brazilian Air Force base; it is named for former São Paulo governor André Franco Montoro and was rebranded as GRU Airport in 2012.
GRU Airport S.A., a consortium of Invepar, South Africa's Airports Company South Africa and the federal operator Infraero, has run the site under concession since 2012. The airport is a hub for LATAM Brasil and Gol Linhas Aéreas and a focus city for Azul. Two parallel runways carry both domestic and long-haul traffic, including nonstop service to Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.
Passenger numbers set a new record in 2025, when the airport handled just over 47 million travelers, making it the second busiest airport in South America behind Bogotá. A commuter rail line, CPTM Line 13, and airport bus services connect the terminals to central São Paulo.
