Congonhas–Deputado Freitas Nobre Airport Guide
Congonhas sits about 8 km from downtown São Paulo, inside the built-up city, which makes it the preferred airport for business travelers flying to Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and other domestic cities. It opened on 12 April 1936 as a private airfield for VASP. International flights moved to Guarulhos in 1985, and the airport lost its international designation in 2008. A 2017 renaming honored Deputy José Freitas Nobre, though most people still say Congonhas.
Aena Brasil has operated the airport under a 30-year concession since taking over from Infraero. Gol and LATAM Brasil have hubs here, and Azul uses it as a focus city. The airport is slot-controlled, capped at 30 operations per hour, and open from 6:00 to 22:30. Limits on flight distance and aircraft weight followed the 2007 TAM Flight 3054 accident, and an EMAS overrun arrestor system was installed at the runway ends.
The airport handled about 24.5 million passengers in 2025. Aena is investing in a new passenger terminal and a larger commercial apron, which will raise the stand count from 30 to 37.
