Prefeito Renato Moreira Airport guide

Prefeito Renato Moreira Airport serves Imperatriz, the second-largest city in Maranhão state and the commercial centre of the southwest of the state. It is also the gateway to the Chapada das Mesas region. The airport lies about 5 km from the city centre.

The present airport replaced an earlier facility and has been in use since 1973. Air service in the area began in the late 1930s with seaplanes on the Tocantins River. A first airfield with an earth runway followed after World War II, but it flooded in the rainy season, so the current site was chosen in the late 1960s.

Infraero administered the airport from 1980 until April 2021, when CCR won a 30-year concession. CCR was rebranded as Motiva in 2025, and the Mexican operator ASUR took over Motiva's airports in 2026. A R$ 60 million renovation and expansion was delivered in October 2024.

The passenger terminal covers 2,380 m². LATAM Brasil and Azul fly to Brasília, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and São Luís. General aviation, air taxi and flying club traffic also use the field. The airport handled 347,891 passengers in 2024, up from 213,587 in 2022.
