Kansas City International Airport Guide
Kansas City International Airport sits in Platte County, Missouri, about 24 km northwest of downtown Kansas City. Opened on November 11, 1972, the airport served the metro area from three circular terminals for five decades before a single $1.5 billion terminal opened in February 2023. The new terminal has 40 gates across two concourses, Concourse A with 13 gates and Concourse B with 27 gates, and a single security checkpoint with 16 lanes serves both.
Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier, joined by Delta, American, United, Alaska, Frontier and Allegiant, among others. The airport recorded more than 12.1 million passengers in 2024, the busiest year in its history.
MCI is owned and operated by the Kansas City Aviation Department. The airport covers more than 10,600 acres and operates three runways, the longest of which measures 10,801 feet. A 6,219-space parking garage forms part of the terminal complex.
