Cancún International Airport Guide
Cancún International Airport opened for commercial service on May 12, 1975, and has grown into Mexico's second-busiest airport by total traffic. Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) operates the facility, which sits on the Yucatán Peninsula in the Mexican Caribbean.
In 2025 the airport handled 29.3 million passengers, of whom 19.5 million traveled internationally — the highest international total of any airport in Latin America. Two parallel asphalt runways, one 3,500 metres long and the other 2,800 metres, support more than 500 flights on a typical day, with peak holiday schedules exceeding 600 daily operations.
Cancún functions primarily as an inbound gateway rather than a domestic hub: most mainline US and Canadian carriers fly here, giving it more United States destinations than any airport outside the country. It also serves as an operating base for Viva Aerobus, Volaris, and Magnicharters. Beyond scheduled passenger service, the airport handles general aviation, flight training, and international charter traffic.
