Kagoshima Airport guide

Kagoshima Airport opened on 1 April 1972, replacing an earlier airfield south of Kagoshima city, and sits in the Kirishima foothills at an elevation of 272 metres. It is administered as a national airport by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, while Kagoshima Airport Building Co., Ltd. operates the passenger terminal. A single 3,000-metre runway equipped with an instrument landing system handles all traffic, and a dedicated business-jet facility named Sakurajima opened alongside it in October 2021.

In fiscal year 2024 the airport handled about 5.73 million passengers — 5.54 million domestic and 189,000 international — on roughly 31,700 aircraft movements, making it Kyushu's second-busiest airport after Fukuoka. The Tokyo Haneda–Kagoshima route is regularly ranked among Japan's five busiest domestic air corridors. Skymark Airlines and Japan Air Commuter both base operations here, and Skytrax has ranked the airport among the world's top domestic airports in recent years.

Kagoshima Airport is the main air gateway to the Satsunan Islands chain south of Kyushu, connecting them to mainland Japan, and it also serves the southwestern part of neighbouring Miyazaki Prefecture. An observation deck, hot-spring foot baths and a bicycle rental service are among the amenities inside the terminal.
