Amami Airport guide

Amami Airport sits on the northeastern edge of Amami Oshima, in the Kasari area of Amami City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The island lies about 380 km south of the Kagoshima mainland, and the airport is its main air gateway.

The current airport opened on 10 July 1988 with a 2,000 m by 45 m runway, replacing an earlier airfield about 2 km away that opened on 1 June 1964 with a 1,240 m runway. Kagoshima Prefecture manages the airport, and Amami Airport Terminal Building Co., Ltd. runs the terminal.

The terminal has check-in counters and an arrivals hall on the ground floor, with the security checkpoint, shops, a restaurant and an observation deck on the second floor. Taxis wait outside the arrivals exit, and the island bus airport line stops at the pick-up area outside departures. Rental car and long-term parking shuttles use the same area. Naze, the centre of Amami City, is about an hour away by car.

Flights link Amami with Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Osaka and Tokyo, and with the neighbouring islands of Kikai, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu and Yoron, as well as Naha.
