Kempegowda International Airport opened in May 2008, replacing HAL Airport as Bengaluru's primary commercial gateway. Located 35 km north of the city in Devanahalli, it is owned and operated by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), a public-private consortium. In FY2024-25 the airport handled 41.87 million passengers, making it the third-busiest airport in India after Delhi and Mumbai.

The airport has two parallel runways, each 4,000 metres long. Two passenger terminals serve different carrier groups: Terminal 1 handles domestic-only operations, while Terminal 2, which opened in phases from January 2023, manages all international flights plus select domestic carriers. A Namma Metro extension directly connecting the airport to the city is under construction.

BLR is a major hub for Indian carriers and a key international gateway for South India's technology sector. It recorded 264,553 aircraft movements in FY2024-25 and handles over 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually, reflecting strong growth driven by both business and leisure traffic.
