Kangra Airport guide

Kangra Airport sits at Gaggal in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as Gaggal Airport and Dharamshala Airport, and its ICAO code is VIGG. The Airports Authority of India runs it. The foundation stone was laid in October 1986, and scheduled flights began in 1990 with Vayudoot.

The single asphalt runway, 15/33, is 1,372 metres long. That length limits operations to small aircraft. A new terminal building opened in March 2007, when the runway was also extended.

The airport serves Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and the wider Kangra district. In the 2025-26 fiscal year it handled 164,056 passengers and 2,868 aircraft movements, down about a fifth from roughly 210,000 passengers the year before. A two-phase expansion plan from 2022 would lengthen the runway to about 1,900 metres and later about 3,010 metres, so that narrow-body jets such as the Airbus A320 could land. Phase 1 needs a bridge carrying the runway over the Manjhi River, and land acquisition is under way.
