Wamena Airport guide

Wamena Airport (ICAO WAVV) serves Wamena, the capital of Jayawijaya Regency in Highland Papua, Indonesia. The terminal sits about 1 km from the town centre. Wamena lies in the Baliem Valley, which has no road link to the coast, so the airport carries most of the passengers and freight that reach the central highlands.

Missionaries built the first airstrip here in 1954. Dutch authorities began regular air services in 1960, and the Indonesian government took over the field after 1963. A fire destroyed the old 965 square metre terminal in 2011. Its replacement, a 4,000 square metre building with five check-in counters, was inaugurated on 30 December 2015. A separate 360 square metre cargo terminal handles freight.

The airport recorded about 343,000 passengers and 31,705 aircraft movements in 2024, and it also moved more than 123,000 tonnes of cargo. Scheduled flights run mainly to Jayapura and Timika. Susi Air links Wamena with small highland airstrips such as Ilaga, Kenyam, Mulia and Oksibil. Cargo operators include Cardig Air and Jayawijaya Dirgantara. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation operates the airport.
