Dortheys Hiyo Eluay International Airport serves Jayapura, the capital of Indonesia's Papua province, from the town of Sentani beside Lake Sentani. It is the largest airport on the island of New Guinea and the easternmost airport in Indonesia. Japanese forces built the original airfield in 1943 during World War II; American troops captured it in April 1944 and used it as a base for the New Guinea campaign before it passed to Dutch, then Indonesian, civilian administration. The airport carries the official name of Theys Hiyo Eluay, a Papuan tribal leader and independence advocate assassinated in 2001.

PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia, trading as InJourney Airports, has managed the site since October 2019 under a government-owned concession. Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation designated the airport international in 2024, though scheduled service remains domestic; international movements are limited to occasional charter flights. A single asphalt runway, extended for jet operations, handles both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. Beyond scheduled routes to Jakarta and other major Indonesian cities, the airport is the principal transfer point for smaller carriers flying into Papua's interior highlands, including Wamena, Nabire and Dekai, where road access is limited or absent.
