Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport guide

Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport serves Banda Aceh and the wider Aceh province at the northern tip of Sumatra. It sits in Blang Bintang District, Aceh Besar Regency, about 13.5 km southeast of the Banda Aceh city centre, at an elevation of 20 m.

The Japanese built the field as a military airbase in 1943, and it reopened under the Indonesian government in 1953. After the 2004 tsunami, a redevelopment programme finished around 2009 added a new terminal building and lengthened the runway from 2,250 m to 3,000 m. The single asphalt runway, designated 17/35, takes wide-body aircraft.

Traffic reached a peak of 1.27 million passengers in 2018, fell to 321,285 in 2021 during the pandemic, and recovered to 797,314 in 2024 with 8,811 aircraft movements. Most flights are domestic, with Medan and Jakarta the main links, and international services have included Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
