Debre Markos Airport guide

Debre Markos Airport serves the city of Debre Markos in the East Gojjam zone of Ethiopia's Amhara Region. It is also known as Negus Tekle Haymanot Airport, after the 19th-century king who built the Church of Markos. The airport sits in the highlands at an elevation of about 2,480 metres, which affects the landing distance needed by larger aircraft.

The airfield was out of service for nearly 30 years. It was rebuilt and reopened, with an inauguration ceremony in July 2026. Ethiopian Airlines began scheduled flights from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in the spring of 2026. The route is flown with De Havilland Dash 8 Q400 turboprops three times a week, and the flight takes under an hour. Ethiopian is the only airline serving the airport.

The single runway is 2,400 metres long and 30 metres wide. That length suits the Dash 8 Q400 and the Boeing 737. Addis Ababa lies about 300 kilometres to the southeast, a drive of around seven hours, which makes the flight a large time saving for travellers to the city.
