Bahir Dar Airport guide

Bahir Dar Airport lies about 8 km west of Bahir Dar, the capital of Ethiopia's Amhara Region, close to the southern shore of Lake Tana. It is the main air gateway for the city, the Blue Nile Falls and the lake monasteries.

The airport has a single asphalt runway, 04/22, at an elevation of about 1,821 m. The Ethiopian Air Force also uses the field. Ethiopian Airlines is the main scheduled carrier, with flights to Addis Ababa and Lalibela.

A new passenger terminal covering 8,300 square metres was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in August 2026. It cost 4.1 billion birr and can process up to 700 passengers at a time. It replaces an older terminal damaged during conflict. The expanded apron takes four wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 777, and six Boeing 737s at once.

Ethiopian Airports Enterprise operates the airport, which has one runway and one passenger terminal, so every scheduled flight to and from Bahir Dar uses the same terminal building.
