Gerardo Tobar López Airport guide

Gerardo Tobar López Airport (ICAO: SKBU) is a small regional airport on Colombia's Pacific coast. It serves the port of Buenaventura in the Valle del Cauca department. The airfield sits at 48 feet (15 m) above sea level, about 6 km from the city, in a tropical rainforest climate where low cloud and heavy rain are common.

The airport has one asphalt runway, 09/27, about 1,200 m (3,937 ft) long. That length limits it to turboprops and small regional aircraft. Aerocivil, Colombia's civil aviation authority, administers the airport. SATENA flies to Bogotá and Medellín's Olaya Herrera Airport, the latter route added in December 2024. Clic is listed with Bogotá flights, added in December 2022. Schedules change often, so confirm flights with the airline before you travel.

Buenaventura is Colombia's main Pacific port, and local officials have pushed for upgrades for more than 15 years. A July 2026 column outlines proposals for a taxiway, a runway extension to 2,000 m so Boeing 737s could land, a new terminal and a new control tower, at an estimated cost of about COP 150,000 million. Part of the land reserved for the extension is occupied by an informal settlement. None of these works has been completed.
