Kangding Airport Guide
Garze Kangding Airport serves Kangding, the capital of Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan. It sits at 4,280 metres above sea level, which makes it the fourth-highest airport in the world, behind Daocheng Yading, Qamdo Bamda and Shigatse Tingri. Construction began in September 2006 and the airport opened on 26 April 2009.
The airport lies about 40 kilometres northwest of Kangding. Its single concrete runway, 15/33, is 4,000 metres long. The length offsets the thin air at this altitude, where aircraft need a much longer roll to take off. Two experienced captains are required at the controls when landing here, and bad weather can force a flight to turn back to Chengdu.
Sichuan Airlines flies the only scheduled route, to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. Traffic is light. The airport handled 25,417 passengers and 944 aircraft movements in 2021, along with 2.9 tonnes of cargo. Sichuan Airport Group operates the airport.
