Changsha Huanghua International Airport opened on 29 August 1989, replacing the older Datuopu Airport as the main gateway to Hunan province. It sits east of downtown Changsha and is owned and operated by Hunan Airport Management Group. The airport ranked as mainland China's 12th busiest by passenger traffic in 2022, second in south-central China only to Guangzhou Baiyun.

China Southern Airlines, Okay Airways and XiamenAir base aircraft at Huanghua as their operating hub, alongside regional carriers such as Chengdu Airlines, Kunming Airlines and Loong Air that also serve the airport's domestic terminal. The airport handles cargo through a dedicated freight apron supporting Hunan's express delivery industry.

A third runway and a new Terminal 3 are under construction as part of an expansion project targeting completion around 2026, intended to lift capacity as passenger numbers approach the airport's current design limits. The Changsha Maglev Express links the terminal to Changsha South railway station in under 20 minutes, connecting onward to the city's metro network.
