Kenneth Kaunda International Airport Guide
Kenneth Kaunda International Airport sits in Chongwe District, 27 kilometres northeast of Lusaka's central business district. It is Zambia's largest airport, handling around 75% of the country's passenger traffic at an elevation of 1,152 metres above sea level.
The airport opened in 1967 as Lusaka International Airport and was renamed in 2011 to honour Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's first president. A US$360 million expansion funded by China's Exim Bank began in 2015, culminating in the opening of Terminal Two in August 2021, which added six jet-bridge-equipped gates for international traffic.
The airport serves as the hub for Proflight Zambia and Zambia Airways, with international connections to the Middle East, southern and eastern Africa provided by carriers including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates, and RwandAir. Passenger numbers reached 1.53 million in 2023, surpassing pre-COVID levels.
