John F. Kennedy International Airport Guide
Last updated 2026-04-21 UTC
John F. Kennedy International Airport sits in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, 26 km southeast of Midtown Manhattan. Opened in 1948 as New York International Airport — commonly known as Idlewild — it was renamed in 1963 following President Kennedy's assassination. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has operated the airport since its founding.
JFK handled 63.3 million passengers in 2024, making it the sixth-busiest airport in the United States and eleventh busiest globally. The airport is a major gateway for transatlantic and transpacific routes, with roughly half of all passengers traveling internationally. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines each operate hubs here, and JetBlue uses Terminal 5 as its primary operating base.
The airport spans five active passenger terminals across 2,100 acres, with four runways. A major redevelopment program is underway: the existing Terminal 1 is being replaced by a new 23-gate facility with phased opening from 2026, and a new Terminal 6 is nearing completion. The AirTrain JFK connects all terminals to the subway and Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica and Howard Beach stations.
