Buffalo Niagara International Airport Guide
Last updated 2026-04-21 UTC
Buffalo Niagara International Airport sits in Cheektowaga, New York, about 18 km east of downtown Buffalo. Opened as Buffalo Municipal Airport in 1926, it is among the oldest continuously operating public airports in the United States. The current terminal opened in 1997 and was expanded in 2001 to its present 24-gate configuration.
The airport handled approximately 5 million passengers in 2024, the highest total since 2018. Southwest Airlines accounts for the largest share of traffic, followed by JetBlue, American, Delta, and United. The airport offers nonstop service to over 30 domestic and international destinations, with routes to Canada and the Caribbean handled through an on-site U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility.
BUF draws significant cross-border traffic from southern Ontario, particularly the Greater Toronto Area some 170 km to the northeast. Its position near Niagara Falls — roughly 35 km to the north — makes it a gateway for both leisure and business travelers serving two countries.
