Watertown International Airport sits in the Town of Hounsfield, Jefferson County, about 10 km west of the city of Watertown. Its postal address is in the hamlet of Dexter. The airport opened in 1929 and Jefferson County bought it from the city of Watertown for $1 in the mid-2000s.

It is a non-hub primary commercial service airport, and its scheduled passenger flights are subsidised through the federal Essential Air Service program. American Airlines flies twice daily to Philadelphia International Airport, which links the north country to more than 100 onward destinations. The airport serves Northern New York, the Fort Drum region and parts of Southern Ontario.

The airport also handles general aviation and flight training, and it is a port of entry for private aircraft arriving from abroad on two hours' notice to customs. Both runways are 150 feet wide asphalt strips. The longer runway, 10/28, measures 7,001 feet. Runway 7/25 measures 4,999 feet.

A redevelopment funded in part by a $28 million state award added a 25,000-square-foot terminal with a new lobby, ticketing and baggage claim areas, and a passenger jet bridge. Parking is free, and Interstate 81 is a few minutes away.
