Chicago Rockford International Airport guide

Chicago Rockford International Airport sits south of Rockford in northern Illinois, about 68 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It opened in 1946 on the grounds of the former Camp Grant military base and is run by the Greater Rockford Airport Authority. It has held U.S. port of entry status since 2004 and lies within a foreign-trade zone.

Passenger service is small. Allegiant Air is the only regularly scheduled airline, flying to leisure destinations in the Las Vegas, Phoenix/Mesa, Nashville and Florida markets. Apple Vacations has also run seasonal charters to Cancun, Huatulco and Punta Cana. The airport handled about 262,400 passengers and 46,910 aircraft operations in 2024.

Cargo is the larger business. UPS Airlines operates a major hub here, and Amazon Air, ABX Air, Air Transport International and Atlas Air also fly in. RFD ranked as the 12th-busiest U.S. cargo airport in 2025, with more than 3.4 billion pounds handled. Two runways, 7/25 at 10,002 feet and 1/19 at 8,200 feet, both with instrument landing systems, let it take large freighters, including the Antonov An-124.
