Chicago O'Hare International Airport Guide
Last updated 2026-04-21 UTC
Chicago O'Hare International Airport sits on the city's Northwest Side, about 29 km from the Loop. It opened for commercial operations in October 1955 and has grown into one of the busiest airports in the world by both passenger count and aircraft movements. The City of Chicago owns the airport and it is operated by the Chicago Department of Aviation.
O'Hare covers 7,627 acres and has eight active runways — more than any other civilian airport in the world. United Airlines and American Airlines use it as a primary hub, accounting for the majority of domestic capacity. Dozens of international carriers connect the airport to destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Africa without a stop.
The airport has been undergoing a major modernisation program since 2018, the O'Hare 21 plan, which includes a new Global Terminal, extended concourses, and expanded capacity. The Blue Line of the Chicago L provides a direct rail link to downtown without a transfer, running around the clock.
