Hana Airport sits on Maui's northeast shore, about three nautical miles northwest of Hana town. The Hawaiian name is Kahua Mokulele o Hana. It is one of the few ways into the Hana district other than the winding Hana Highway, which is the reason a short flight from Kahului draws travellers who want to skip the drive. Elevation is 78 feet, and the field has no control tower.

The Territory of Hawaii funded the airport in 1945, construction began in November 1948, and it opened for traffic in 1950. A single asphalt runway, 8/26, measures 3,606 by 100 feet, which suits small commuter aircraft. In the 12 months to December 2014 the field recorded 3,364 aircraft operations, about nine a day. Air taxi flights made up 58 percent of them and general aviation 42 percent.

Hawaiian Airlines flew here in 1969, and later commuter carriers included Air Hawaii, Princeville Airways, Aloha IslandAir and Pacific Wings. Pacific Wings flew under the federal Essential Air Service subsidy until April 2007. Mokulele Airlines now provides scheduled service to Kahului. The airport has no public bus and no taxi service, so visitors arrive by rental car, hotel shuttle or a prearranged private transfer.
