The airport opened as John Rodgers Airport on March 21, 1927, was renamed Honolulu Airport in 1947, gained "International" in 1951, and took its current name in a May 2017 ceremony honoring the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye. The Hawaii Department of Transportation's Airports Division operates the facility, which sits three miles northwest of downtown Honolulu on the island of Oahu and served nearly 22 million passengers in 2025.

The airport is Hawaiian Airlines' hub, linking the US mainland and Asia-Pacific with inter-island flights across the archipelago. Its main runway, 8R/26L, is known as the Reef Runway: completed in 1977, it was the first major runway built entirely offshore and once served as a designated Space Shuttle alternate landing site. Architect Vladimir Ossipoff designed the Diamond Head, Ewa and Central concourses added to the main terminal between 1970 and 1980.

Recent upgrades include electric trams for the inter-terminal Wiki Wiki Shuttle, introduced in February 2026, and electric buses serving the rental car facility, added in December 2025. The airport also handles significant air cargo, moving more than 600,000 tons in 2025 through facilities including dedicated Delta and United cargo buildings near Terminal 3.
