Wilmington Airport sits on 1,250 acres in unincorporated New Castle County, about 8 km south of downtown Wilmington. It is the only airport in Delaware with scheduled commercial flights. The airport was known as New Castle Airport until it was renamed, and it began as a wartime field that the U.S. Army Air Forces used as New Castle Army Air Base.

Trans World Airlines and American Airlines started the first airline flights in Delaware from here in late 1947. Scheduled service has since come and gone more than once, and the most recent gap ran from June 2022 to January 2023. Avelo Airlines began flying in February 2023, operates a base here and carries all of the airport's passenger traffic. Year-round routes go to Florida and San Juan, with seasonal flights to other leisure destinations. American Airlines sells a Landline coach connection to Philadelphia International Airport.

New Castle County owns the airport and the Delaware River and Bay Authority operates it. Most movements are general aviation, with military and air taxi flying making up much of the rest, and a section of the field hosts the New Castle Air National Guard Base. Passengers board and deplane by air stairs because the terminal has no jet bridges. A recent expansion added a second gate and more seating, and the airport offers parking in three lots next to the terminal.
