Sacramento International Airport sits 17 km northwest of downtown Sacramento, serving the Sacramento metropolitan area and much of California's Central Valley. The airport opened in 1967 as Sacramento Metropolitan Airport and was redesignated as Sacramento International following the addition of a new terminal building. It is operated by the Sacramento County Department of Airports, which is self-funded through user fees and rentals without state or local tax support.

The airport has two passenger terminals — Terminal A and Terminal B — connected via pedestrian bridges to a central parking structure. Terminal B received LEED Silver certification and houses a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility for international arrivals. In 2023, the airport launched SMForward, a $1.4 billion capital expansion program that includes a new parking garage, elevated skyway, and terminal upgrades.

SMF recorded 13.9 million passengers in 2025, its highest annual total, following a record 13.6 million in 2024. Southwest Airlines carries more than half of all passengers. The airport offers nonstop service to over 50 destinations, including a small number of international routes to Mexico and Canada.
