Hollywood Burbank/Bob Hope Airport Guide
Hollywood Burbank Airport sits about three miles northwest of downtown Burbank, in Los Angeles County. It serves the San Fernando Valley, Glendale, Pasadena and Hollywood, and is roughly 12 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It is the only airport in the area with direct rail service to downtown Los Angeles, through the Burbank Airport-North and Burbank Airport-South Metrolink stations.
The field opened on May 30, 1930, as United Airport. It was later the Union Air Terminal and then the Lockheed Air Terminal, and was the largest commercial airport in the Los Angeles area until 1946. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority bought it from Lockheed in 1978. From 2003 to 2017 it was legally named Bob Hope Airport.
Two asphalt runways serve the airport: 15/33 at 6,886 feet and 8/26 at 5,802 feet. It handled about 6.2 million passengers and 133,845 aircraft operations in 2025, after a record 6.55 million passengers in 2024. Southwest is the largest carrier. A new 14-gate replacement terminal, approved by Burbank voters in 2016 and under construction since 2024, is scheduled to open in October 2026.
