San Francisco International Airport sits on the western shore of San Francisco Bay, about 21 kilometers south of downtown San Francisco. It has four runways and handled 54.5 million passengers in 2025, making it the 13th-busiest airport in the United States. The City and County of San Francisco owns and operates it.
United Airlines uses SFO as a major hub and primary transpacific gateway. Alaska Airlines also maintains a hub here. The airport offers nonstop service to over 140 international destinations. A BART rail line connects the airport directly to San Francisco, Oakland, and the broader Bay Area, with the station located inside the International Terminal.
The airport opened in 1927 as Mills Field Municipal Airport on a 150-acre site. Harvey Milk Terminal 1 was renamed in 2019 to honor the civil rights leader and San Francisco supervisor. The International Terminal, opened in 2000, is the largest international terminal in North America by area.
