Ontario International Airport sits 58 km east of downtown Los Angeles in San Bernardino County, California. It serves as a less congested alternative to LAX for the Inland Empire — a region of more than 4 million people spanning San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The airport handled 7.1 million passengers in 2024, a 67% increase since 2016 when the Ontario International Airport Authority took over from Los Angeles World Airports.
Commercial service at Ontario dates to 1946, when Pacific Overseas Airlines inaugurated trans-Pacific passenger flights. The airport has two terminals across 530,000 sq ft with 26 passenger gates plus a dedicated international arrivals facility. Southwest Airlines carries the largest share of passengers at 36%, followed by American Airlines and Frontier. International destinations include Taiwan, El Salvador, and Mexico.
Ontario is also a major cargo hub, ranking eighth in the United States by cargo volume in 2024 with 793,370 tonnes of freight and mail. UPS Airlines uses the airport as a West Coast hub, and FedEx Express maintains a significant distribution operation here. Two parallel runways handle over 100,000 aircraft operations per year.
