Buchanan Field Guide
Buchanan Field sits about one mile west of downtown Concord, in Contra Costa County east of San Francisco Bay. The county bought the land in 1942, and the Army used it as Concord Army Air Base during the war. It opened to civil aviation in 1947 and has stayed a county-run airport since.
The field is mainly a general aviation airport. The FAA counted 119,598 aircraft operations in the year ending April 30, 2022, roughly 327 a day, and 340 aircraft were based there. About 95 percent of the traffic was general aviation and 5 percent air taxi. Four runways, between 2,770 and 5,001 feet long, serve flight schools, business jets and helicopter training. A county noise ordinance limits flight training hours.
Scheduled service is limited. JSX flies 30-seat Embraer regional jets as a scheduled charter, starting in April 2016 with flights to Burbank. Passengers use a dedicated terminal on John Glenn Drive instead of a commercial screening checkpoint. The airport has no customs or immigration facilities.
