Don Mueang International Airport Guide

Don Mueang opened as a Royal Thai Air Force base in 1914 and began scheduled commercial flights in 1924 with a KLM service between Amsterdam and Bangkok, making it one of the oldest continuously operating airports in Asia. It served as Bangkok's main international gateway until Suvarnabhumi Airport opened in 2006. Don Mueang closed briefly, then reopened in 2007 to handle domestic and, later, low-cost international traffic, restoring its role as one of the city's two commercial airports.

Airports of Thailand operates the site on land owned by the Royal Thai Air Force, which still bases military units alongside the civilian terminals. The airport functions as a hub for low-cost carriers, with Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air all basing significant operations there. Routes fan out across Southeast Asia, South Asia and China, alongside an extensive domestic network reaching most Thai provinces.

A Phase III development plan calls for a new international terminal and a renovation of the existing international terminal, intended to lift total capacity from around 30 million to 50 million passengers a year. The project is in the design stage, with completion targeted for the early 2030s.
