Suvarnabhumi Airport opened for commercial operations on 28 September 2006, replacing Don Mueang International Airport as Bangkok's primary international gateway. Located in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan province, it sits approximately 30 km east of central Bangkok. The airport is operated by Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) and handled 62.2 million passengers in 2024, ranking it among the 20 busiest airports globally.

The airport has three parallel runways and two passenger facilities: a main terminal building connected to concourses A through G, and the Midfield Satellite Terminal 1 (SAT-1), which opened in March 2025 with 28 gates, 8 of which accommodate widebody Code F aircraft such as the Airbus A380. SAT-1 is linked to the main terminal via a 700-metre underground automated people mover tunnel. Thai Airways International uses the airport as its primary hub.

The main terminal's control tower stood 132.2 metres tall — the world's tallest free-standing control tower from 2006 to 2014. The terminal was designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn Architects.
