Roland Garros Airport Guide
Roland Garros Airport sits in Sainte-Marie on Réunion's northern coast, roughly 10 km east of the island's capital Saint-Denis. Named in 1993 after the French aviator born in Saint-Denis, it is France's 11th busiest airport and the only significant international gateway on the island. The airport operates two asphalt runways — a 3,200-metre primary runway and a 2,670-metre secondary — enabling direct non-stop flights to metropolitan France, including Paris–Charles de Gaulle, Paris–Orly, and Marseille.
Air Austral, which is headquartered on the airport grounds, serves as the primary carrier and hub operator. Air France, Corsair, and French Bee also operate frequent services to mainland France, while Air Mauritius and Air Madagascar connect the island across the Indian Ocean region. In 2025 the airport handled 2,764,811 local passengers, a 4% increase on 2024, alongside 60,871 transit passengers.
A new arrivals terminal — the world's first naturally ventilated airport building of its size in a tropical climate — opened in February 2024, adding 13,200 m² of floor space and three baggage carousels. Construction of a new departures terminal designed for 4 million annual passengers is planned to begin in 2027. The airport has held Airport Carbon Accreditation since 2019.
