Teniente Amín Ayub González International Airport opened in January 2013 in the Capitán Miranda district, built to replace an older Encarnación airport that flooded when the Yacyretá dam raised the Paraná River's water level. The Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil (DINAC) took over ownership and operation from the Encarnación municipal government in 2025, after the city council approved transferring land valued at USD 19 million to the Paraguayan state.

In August 2025, DINAC recategorized the airport as an international, 24-hour (H24) facility, the third in Paraguay after Asunción and Ciudad del Este. Passengers are processed through a temporary 1,060-square-metre contingency module while a larger terminal building, planned to triple the current structural space, goes through bid evaluation. The single asphalt runway can handle Boeing 737-type aircraft carrying up to 120 passengers, and the aircraft parking apron is being expanded to hold more than 100 aircraft.

Flybondi launched the airport's first international route, to Buenos Aires, in August 2025, but has repeatedly paused and resumed the service due to low ticket demand, keeping it available for charter operations tied to events such as the Rally World Championship. Encarnación itself, the capital of Itapúa Department, sits on the Paraná River across from Posadas, Argentina, and is the gateway to nearby UNESCO World Heritage Jesuit mission ruins.
